Cactus fans mark jubilee

THE Bristol Autumn Show made a welcome return to Filton to celebrate the Bristol Cactus Society's diamond jubilee.

The biannual show had been stopped in 2009 but was resurrected this year to celebrate the society's landmark and as a memorial to show manger Diane Tripp's sister Barbara, who died on September 26 last year aged 84.

The show, held at Filton community centre, celebrates cacti, mesembryanthemum and other succulents, many of which are at their best in the autumn months.

There were 13 entrants submitting more than 250 plants for judges to examine.

Miss Tripp said: "It was brilliant because the weather was so lovely. We ran the show from 1987 until 2009 but didn't think we would run it again. We decided to try again this year because it is the Bristol Cactus Society's diamond jubilee and partly as a memorial for my sister Barbara who died last year as we wanted to remember her in some way.

"The quantity and quality of the entries have been so good it may well be worth looking at doing it again in 2014. It has been a great success."
