INSPECTORS from schools watchdog Ofsted were left impressed by their first visit to a North Somerset children's centre.
They rated Nailsea and Backwell Children's Centre as good following an inspection last month.
Inspector Christine Huard said it was welcoming and friendly and made good provision for families living in the local area.
The centre, which is based in the grounds of Kingshill School in Pound Lane, opened last year and has two part-time staff and one full-time staff member.
In the inspection report, children were praised for making good progress in developing the skills needed to successfully transfer to primary school. Mrs Huard said that staff were committed and dedicated, and provide good supervision.
In the report she said: "The outcomes for families are good.
"They enjoy and value the wide range of activities offered and if they are not directly provided by the centre, families are directed and supported in finding where their needs can be met."
Mrs Huard praised the teamwork, good relationships and commitment of everyone involved with the centre. She said families using the centre felt safe and protected, and there was good promotion of healthy lifestyles.
Staff were also praised for providing advice on parenting skills, particularly in managing behaviour.
The inspector felt that further work could be done to provide more opportunities for fathers to bond with their children through play.
Ellen Genge, who leads the children's centre, said she was delighted with the report.
She said: "To be graded as good is a fantastic achievement and provides us with a great base to move forward in the future.
"Staff have formed strong partnerships within the community and work closely with other agencies in order to provide the best possible provision."
